The STANAG 2920 and STANAG 4296 standards are standards for the assessment of ballistic strength recognized in all NATO member countries.

Unlike compliance with European standard EN 166 which determines the impact resistance of a steel sphere with a diameter of 6 mm and a mass of 0.86 g which strikes the eyepieces at a speed of 45 m / s, compliance with the STANAG standard 4296 guarantees the ballistic resistance defined by the STANAG 2920 standard, determining the ballistic resistance against bullets with caliber 3.6 mm (0.14 ") and weight of 325 mg, fired at a speed of 215 m / s, or 774 km / h (with the possibility of reaching even higher speeds as reported in the test report).

The STANAG 2920 standard does not define a minimum protection threshold in the same way as EN 166, but allows you to specify a V50 speed which represents the speed at which a bullet could pierce the eyepiece with a probability of 50%. In addition, glasses conforming to STANAG 4296 must meet a number of requirements, such as:
• impact resistance according to the conditions defined by the STANAG 2920 standard;
• criteria relating to their use: the glasses must be as light and comfortable as possible, as well as minimizing fogging (through ventilation and / or appropriate coating) and having good resistance to scratches in the case of prolonged use;
• optical quality: the glasses must provide a field of view of at least 160 ° and must not distort the vision;
• additional features: the glasses must have a degree of gloss as low as possible and must be compatible with the use of other protective elements.
